In my opinion the story The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst was a good and sad story. It was a good story because it gave good detail and I enjoyed it. It was also sad because of the ending. The narrator was selfish and only thought about himself. He didn’t think about the safety of his little brother. This story could teach many lessons. But my favorite part of the story was when Doodle walked for everybody on his birthday. I could imagine how proud his parents were. If I could read the story again I would.
The story The Scarlet Ibis was a really good story. It all started when a young boy wanted a brother. So his mom was having a baby and as he wanted he got a brother. But he didn’t know his brother Doodle was going to be born with differences. Doodle couldn’t walk, too excited, too hot, too cold, or too tired and that he must always be treated gently. The narrator and his family thought that he would die so they got him a coffin made. When Doodle smiled at the narrator he knew that he was all there. Everywhere the narrator went his mom would make him take Doodle so we took him to the only place he knew where true beauty was and that was Old Woman Swamp. Every day since that he took Doodle to Old Woman Swamp and taught him how to walk. Then on Doodle’s birthday they surprised the family by showing them that he could walk. Everyone was so happy but the narrator knew he wasn’t happy because he taught him how to walk. He was happy that he wouldn’t be going to school with a disabled brother. While eating dinner the family notices a Scarlet Ibis sitting in a tree. The scarlet Ibis dies and falls out the tree and Doodle buries it. Then Doodle and the narrator go to Old Woman Swamp. It starts to storm shortly after they get there so the narrator starts running and running until he can’t see Doodle anymore. When he finally turns around to see where he went he finds him sitting under a tree bloody. Doodle dies from his body being overworked. Now the narrator has to live with the fact that he killed his own brother because he was only thinking about himself.
